Hey Young Chefs!

On Day 7, we went to ABC Kitchen, Books of Wonder, and Kalustyan’s, a spice store.

I went to ABC Kitchen with my mom and our friend, Joyce Wan. At ABC Kitchen, I met executive chef, Dan Kluger. He was so nice! we talked about the goat cheese from Lynnhaven and the food that I like to cook. Then he asked us if we were hungry and yes, we were!

ABC Kitchen won the James Beard award for best restaurant in New York in 2011. They specialize in farm-to-table food with an emphasis on local and organic products. The food did not disappoint!

For an appetizer, we ordered the roasted Portabella topped with celery leaves. Mmm!

Chef Dan sent out some heirloom tomatoes on top of toasted homemade bread. That was incredible.

He also sent out a bowl full of roasted beets with homemade yogurt. Talk about delicious!

My mom ordered the bowtie pasta with veal meatballs.

Ms. Joyce ordered a pizza also. She got a wild mushroom pizza. We all shared so we could each have a taste of the different entrées.

For dessert, we ordered a small plate of cookies that included a shortbread cookie, 2 chocolate covered marshmallow cookies, 2 lemon bars topped with blueberry compote, and a chocolate chip cookie.

Just when we thought we couldn’t eat anymore, Chef Dan sent us a salted caramel ice cream sundae topped with candied peanuts and caramel popcorn with chocolate syrup! It was AH-MAZE-ING!

Our bellies were full so we decided to walk the streets of New York. My mom and I ended up at Books of Wonder, a famous independent children’s bookstore on 18th St. They were having this big sidewalk sale and I bought three books for two dollars each!

It started raining, and I had never been to Trader Joe’s, so my mom and I went in there for a little while. Then my mom and I decided to go to a famous spice store called Kalustyan’s. After walking seven blocks the wrong way, we finally managed to get to the store half an hour before it was closing. I bought Herbs de Provence, a Georgian herb mix, lemon grass powder, schwarma spices, and whole nutmeg.
